There is a strange quality to ranking online games in 2026, which is that everyone involved knows a very large object is approaching. Grand Theft Auto VI has been confirmed by Rockstar for a 2026 release, and its online component will inherit the audience of a game that has held six-figure concurrent players for thirteen years.

GTA V has shipped north of two hundred million copies. GTA Online, launched in 2013, is still one of the most profitable products in the industry. Whatever succeeds it arrives with a built-in population larger than most entries on our list will ever reach, and a monetisation apparatus that has been refined on real players for over a decade.

Who has to worry

Everything that competes for the same evenings. The live-service calendar is a zero-sum fight for a fixed number of player hours, and publishers plan seasonal launches around known competition. A release of this size does not take a slice of the market for a week; it takes a large share of the available attention for months, and games with soft populations may not survive the gap.

The games best insulated are the ones with genuinely distinct propositions — the MMOs with committed subscribers, the competitive shooters with esports ecosystems, the co-op games people play with the same three friends. The most exposed are mid-sized open-world and shooter live services competing on broadly similar ground with weaker retention.

The other question

What GTA Online's successor does about monetisation matters beyond Rockstar. The current game's economy — where vehicle and property prices have inflated for a decade in a way that has no relationship to what missions pay — is the clearest example in gaming of a grind engineered to sell currency. Shark Cards worked extraordinarily well. There is no commercial reason to abandon the model and every reason to refine it.

If the sequel arrives with the same structure at greater scale, it sets the standard for the next decade of open-world live service, in the same way the first one did. That is the part worth watching, and it will get considerably less coverage than the map size.

For now, our advice on the existing game stands: if you have friends already playing, it remains a great time. As a fresh investment of several hundred hours, the timing is difficult to recommend.
