Counter-Strike 2
Mechanically the best FPS in existence. Everything surrounding it is a mess, and some of it is worse than a mess.
Counter-Strike's discipline with a hero layer on top, and the cleanest competitive integrity in online shooters.
Valorant's pitch in 2020 was straightforward and slightly cynical: take Counter-Strike's economy, round structure and shooting model, add a hero layer for character identity, and — critically — build the anti-cheat that Valve would not. Six years on, that plan has produced the second-best competitive shooter in the world and arguably the best-administered one.
The shooting is the part people underrate. Valorant is a first-shot-accuracy game with punishing movement inaccuracy and weapon-specific recoil patterns you are expected to learn. Peeker's advantage, crosshair placement and pre-aim discipline matter as much as they do in CS. The agents layer information on top — a wall of vision denial, a drone scouting a site, a flash around a corner — but no ability wins a duel you lost with your aim.
Riot's anti-cheat loads at boot and runs at kernel level, and it is the reason Valorant lobbies are clean in a genre where clean lobbies are otherwise a memory. It is also a driver with ring-0 access to your machine, from a company owned by Tencent, running whether or not you launch the game. That trade is real and each player has to make it consciously. Riot's track record on it has been good; the surface area remains enormous. Anyone who dismisses either the benefit or the risk is not arguing seriously.
There is no polite framing here. Valorant sells cosmetics at prices calibrated by people who have studied exactly how much a committed player will tolerate, and then anchored the range so the tolerable number looks like a bargain. The 2024 console launch and the steady expansion of the agent roster have brought in a lot of newer, younger players who meet that store on day one. Cosmetics-only is the right principle; this is the most aggressive possible execution of it.
Set the store aside — most players eventually do — and what remains is a shooter of exceptional craft with the healthiest competitive integrity in the category. If the kernel driver is a dealbreaker, play Counter-Strike and accept the cheaters. Those are genuinely the two options.

Unmatched tactical depth and a truly hostile community. Bring friends or bring headphones.
Superb character design and gunfeel, undercut by broken promises and a monetisation model built on the ashes of a better one.
