Escape from Tarkov

The most punishing, most detailed shooter ever made, run by a studio that keeps testing its own community's loyalty.

Battlestate Games· 2017· PC

Nothing simulates a gunfight like Tarkov. Bullets have individual penetration values that interact with armour plates by zone. Limbs are tracked separately and bleed. A fracture changes how you move. Your weapon is assembled from real components with real ballistic effects, and the difference between two loadouts is a research project. The depth here is genuinely unmatched, in any shooter, at any price.

The stakes are what people come for. You bring gear into a raid and if you die, it is gone — taken by whoever killed you. That transforms every encounter. Hearing footsteps in Tarkov produces a physiological response that no other game on this list generates, because the loss is real and the escape is never guaranteed until you are physically standing on the extraction point.

The problems are structural

Cheating has been endemic for years, with an entire industry of radar hacks and loot-tracking services that a hardcore extraction shooter is uniquely vulnerable to. Battlestate has banned in waves and the problem persists. Performance is poor, netcode is inconsistent, and progress is wiped on a schedule that resets everyone to nothing.

And then the business

The 2024 Unheard Edition affair — selling a $250 tier including features that earlier buyers had been promised — was a serious breach of trust, and the partial reversal came only after sustained public anger. Combine that with gear advantages tied to purchase tier and the picture is of a studio that treats its most committed customers as a revenue surface. The game is remarkable. The company's record is not, and both belong in the same verdict.

What works

  • Ballistics, armour and medical simulation are unmatched in any shooter
  • Weapon modification depth is extraordinary — hundreds of real parts
  • The stakes of losing your kit produce tension nothing else replicates
  • Map knowledge is a genuine, deep, long-term skill

What doesn't

  • Cheating has been a severe, persistent, sometimes overwhelming problem
  • The 2023 Unheard Edition controversy broke a promise to existing owners
  • Wipes erase all progress on a schedule, by design
  • Performance, netcode and desync remain rough after eight years

The Catch — what it will cost you

The worst monetisation story on this list. In 2024 Battlestate sold a $250 'Unheard Edition' containing a PvE mode, after having promised earlier top-tier buyers all future DLC — then partially reversed under a furious backlash. Higher editions also carry a larger secure container, which is a direct gameplay advantage. This is pay-for-advantage in a hardcore shooter, and it should be disqualifying for a lot of players.
Who it's for: Players who want the highest-stakes shooter in existence and have the time it demands.
