Counter-Strike 2
Mechanically the best FPS in existence. Everything surrounding it is a mess, and some of it is worse than a mess.
The most tactically demanding shooter in the mainstream, built on the best destruction tech in the genre.
Siege's core idea remains the smartest in tactical shooters: the map is destructible, so the geometry of every round is negotiable. Attackers can breach a wall, drone a room, or come through the ceiling. Defenders reinforce, barricade, and open their own sightlines. Nothing is fixed, which means memorised strategies decay and reading the round in real time is the actual skill.
On top of that sits the operator system — seventy-plus characters with unique gadgets that create specific counterplay relationships. Knowing that a particular defender's gadget denies a particular attacker's breach is not flavour, it is the game. That knowledge burden is the biggest barrier to entry in any shooter on this list, and it grows with every season.
Ubisoft's 2025 relaunch modernised the visuals, reworked the lighting and destruction, and opened a free entry point. It was the right move for a ten-year-old game and brought in a wave of new players. It also intensified the pressure on the operator economy, since the free tier's roster limits are where the monetisation now sits.
The community is the problem that never gets fixed. Siege has, by a wide margin, the most hostile solo-queue environment in mainstream competitive gaming, with teamkilling as a recognised in-game harassment vector that Ubisoft has never fully designed out. Play it with people you know. Played that way, it is the deepest tactical shooter available, and there is nothing else quite like breaching a floor above an unsuspecting defence.

The best-run tactical shooter going. It just wants an unreasonable amount of money for gun skins.
Unmatched depth and tension. A genuinely hostile business record. Go in with your eyes open.
